Otoplasty techniques depend on the type of correction needed. The corrections vary from making the ears appear less prominent by bringing them closer to the head, or to even make earlobes appear smaller.Generally, an incision will be made on the back surface of the ear and/or within the inner creases of your ear. Post incisions, there may also be excess cartilage and skin to be removed. Stiches will be used to close the incision. The procedure time is generally 2 hours long.
Following surgery, a head bandage will keep your ears in place and allow for healing. The bandage is normally worn for 14 days after your surgery. Once the bandages are removed, swelling and tenderness is to be expected and this can persist for up to a month after your surgery.
It can take a few weeks until your ears have reached their final shape. Contact sports and swimming should be avoided for 6 weeks post surgery.
Scars will continue to refine & will vary amongst patients depending on their natural healing process & location of incisions. Scars post Otoplasty are hidden in the groove of the ear and the side of the head. They are generally refined to fine incision lines one year after surgery.
Mile to moderate swelling, pain & itchiness after Otoplasty is to be expected and normal. You may also feel nausea and loss of balance temporarily. This is related to swelling around the inner ear and bandages around the head.
Dr. Khan will go through any questions or concerns you may have about your procedure. He will also go through associated risks.
This procedure is commonly performed on younger children around the age of 5. This is because ears have fully formed at this age. It is also a common procedure to have done as a teenage or adult.
You need to stop smoking weeks before the surgery as this can greatly impact the rate of healing.
Contact sports and swimming should be avoided for 6 weeks post surgery.
Typically you will see final results in 3 to 6 months
In most cases, the incisions will be made behind the ear or in the natural folds of the ear, and generally there is no visible scarring.
