Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is designed to treat drooping eyelids that may be aging your face. The skin around our eyes is the thinnest and most fragile on our bodies, and aging tends to begin to appear around our eyes earlier here than in other areas. Aging eyelids can affect a person’s appearance more than looking beyond their years, as alot of emotion is expressed with our eyes. It can also make it difficult to apply eye make up, but also severe cases of eyelid ptosis mean that a patients field of vision is obstructed. Led by world renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Jaffer Khan, your experience is tailored to suit your needs and outcomes.
An incision is placed along the natural crease of the upper eyelid & excess eyelid skin and fat are removed to restore the eyelids to a more youthful aesthetic. The upper eyelid muscles are repositioned as necessary, tightening the upper eyelids.
In lower eyelid surgery, an incision is made below the lash line or inside the eyelid, commonly known as the transconjunctival approach. This incision is created to reposition fat that causes puffiness and to tighten the lower eyelid.
Patients commonly combine eyelid surgery with face lifts to address jowls and sagging of the lower face & to combat signs of overall aging for a full face comprehensive rejuvenation.
Anti-Aging injections placed around the forehead area allows your surgeon to subtly raise and change the shape of your brow, bringing a more youthful aesthetic to the face.
Improvement of Eye Bags
This procedure corrects puffiness beneath the eyes, providing a more rested, rejuvenated and youthful look.
Improvement of Sagging
Sagging, wrinkled skin on the upper eyelid can leave you looking tired and obscure your upper eyelashes. This procedure helps return a naturally youthful shape to eyes, resulting in a more open and refreshed appearance.
The surgery will generally last between 45 minutes to 2 hours, dependent upon whether you are having other procedures take place at the same time, or if you are combining both upper and lower eyelid surgery. Typically, tightness in the eyelid region & difficulty closing your eyes, blurry vision, dry eyes, and itchy eyes are all to be expected. Bruising and swelling is also normal, as the tissues and sensory nerves heal.
Take all medications as prescribed by the clinic and continue to keep your head elevated, even during sleeping.
You will have to avoid lifting, straining, and bending down to pick things up for up to 4 weeks after eyelid surgery and you must protect your eyes from sun and wind.
Generally, patients feel ready to return to desk jobs 10 – 14 days post surgery.
(Every patient is a unique individual and every surgery has unique aspects. Therefore no two procedures or rejuvenation treatments will get the exact same results. Individual results vary from patient to patient.)
Scars will continue to refine & will vary amongst patients depending on their natural healing process & location of incisions. Scars are generally refined to fine incision lines one year after surgery.
Your eyelids may feel unusually tight, and patients commonly have bruising and swelling. Pain medication and muscle relaxants are prescribed. To alleviate any discomfort, cool compress (not cold) may be applied to the eyes, but without pressure.
Dr. Khan will go through any questions or concerns you may have about your procedure. He will also go through associated risks. During your in depth consultation, you will have the ability to see what your eyelid procedure results will look like with an advanced system called the Crisalix 3D Imaging software. The 3D image is created with a specialized camera. *There is no guarantee of specific outcomes so individual results and experiences can vary from person to person.
You must not smoke. Smoking can greatly impair your safety prior to surgery and your ability to heal following surgery.
You can resume regular exercise routines after 3 weeks.
It may take several weeks for the eyelids to adjust to their new shape and for all side effects to resolve. The results of blepharoplasty are intended to be long lasting, but the eyes are still susceptible to the natural aging process.
Dr. Khan places blepharoplasty incisions in certain areas of the eye so they are nearly invisible.
Wearing sunscreen around the eyes, avoiding smoking and practicing a generally healthy lifestyle. Non-surgical treatments such as anti-aging injections and facial fillers can also help maintain your youthful aesthetic.
